Carlos Alcaraz wins Laureus World Sports Awards Breakthrough of the Year

Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz won the Breakthrough of the Year award at the Laureus World Sports Awards. Kazakhstani tennis player Yelena Rybakina, world champion in the 100m hurdles, Nigerian track and field athlete Toby Amusan, Olympic figure skating champion Nathan Chen, American golfer Scotty Sheffler and the Morocco national football team were also nominated in this category.

“In 2022, 20-year-old Alcaraz made a stunning statement in the world of tennis, winning his first US Open Grand Slam title and also becoming the youngest world No. 1 in ATP history,” Alcaraz said in the introduction premiums.

Last week, Alcaraz defended his title at the Masters clay tournament in Madrid.
